At first, I thought coming to the United States was a huge mistake. Dealing with the culture shock and realizing that it is a different world out here activated uncertainties and perceived difficulties, but little did I know that moving to the United States would expose me to more opportunities than I could ever imagine.

I moved to the United States in 2015 for my bachelor’s degree. I had already attended four years of college in Nigeria, which is where I am originally from, and I experienced setbacks when I moved here. The culture shock and the academic challenges took a toll on me as it took me a while to get accustomed to the lifestyle in the United States.

Attending the University of North Texas opened my eyes to a lot of opportunities and things I was not aware of; and college made me develop the skills I needed for the next level of my life. It was not an easy journey trying to obtain a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering, but little did I know that the challenges I faced were propelling me onto the next level. I’d say now that it has been the best decision I have ever made.

Working multiple jobs on campus and developing required competencies in my ongoing journey enabled me build vital life skills as I prepared to venture into the corporate world.

When I attended the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) Conference in early October 2018 and stopped by the SE booth, I was informed about the amazing opportunities SE had to offer and what they were looking for. I was eager to follow up and signed up for more information on the development programs available.

When I received a call from the manager of the Sales Development Program (SDP), I felt excited and certain to make SE the company that I would start my career with, as he was very open and explained how big Schneider is on diversity and inclusion.

I am happy to be part of a company that provides energy and digital solutions for efficiency and sustainability. A company which puts customers first, embraces diversity and places employees as valued assets. I get to learn new things everyday as the possibilities are endless.

With diversity being important at SE, and as a black female, I know I have made the right decision as I am enabled to freely express myself, my culture and values without fears to fit in and also reach my childhood dreams of being an engineering manager. I believe my uniqueness and authenticity adds to the company story. I am proud to be one of our #SEGreatPeople.
