This year, 6,000 permits were <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sun-sentinel.com\/news\/florida\/fl-alligator-season-2017-story.html\" target=\"_blank\">awarded<\/a> to hunters across the state. Last year, they captured 7,145 gators.<\/p>\n<p>There are now around <a href=\"http:\/\/myfwc.com\/wildlifehabitats\/managed\/alligator\/nuisance\/\" target=\"_blank\">1.3 million<\/a> alligators in Florida, and they are no longer protected as an endangered species like they were in the 1970s. Part of the hunting program is geared toward <a href=\"http:\/\/myfwc.com\/wildlifehabitats\/managed\/alligator\/nuisance\/\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cnuisance\u201d alligators<\/a>, which can appear in neighborhoods and sometimes attack people, but animal rights protestors <a href=\"http:\/\/www.palmbeachpost.com\/news\/state--regional\/alligator-hunting-begins-refuge-and-protesters-are-ready-video\/BVQdEzJCFlQJ1kIYmxgGrL\/\" target=\"_blank\">still organize<\/a> regularly in opposition to the hunts.<\/p>\n<p>Alligator hunters like Matt Magner usually have tags that allow them to hunt in specific areas, like the stormwater treatment areas (STAs) of reservoirs. They use hooks and bait to get the gators, and then can choose to keep their kill or sell it for food processing, skins, or heads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey have the same instincts just like a deer and hog,\u201d said Magner, who has been hunting alligators for nine years. \u201cThey\u2019re a top predator, the only thing they\u2019re scared about are other gators. They\u2019re very intelligent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I went alligator hunting with Magner and his friends near <a href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/43nnjm\/florida-army-corps-restore-everglades-lake-okeechobee-flood\" target=\"_blank\">Lake Okeechobee<\/a> as they tried to catch alligators before the end of the season.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 1200px;\" data-iframely-id=\"guDwdQg\" data-embedded-url=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1510330011925-2.gif\" class=\"article__embed article__embed--iframely\">\n<div style=\"left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.3%;\" data-iframely-smart-iframe=\"true\"><iframe  src= width=\"100%\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" ><\/iframe> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>The hunters drive alongside a Stormwater Treatment Area canal in South Bay. Company representatives wait outside the hunting grounds throughout the night and morning to buy dead gators from the hunters. Alligator hunting is one of the few hunting sports in the state where the hunter is allowed to sell their catch. The company will buy the gator directly from the hunter for $15 a foot or they will filet and preserve the hide and give it back to the hunter for a fee.
