Not if you come from industrial automation."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Credit to Author: Fabio Mielli| Date: Wed, 03 Jan 2018 22:28:27 +0000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Everywhere and every day we are overwhelmed by articles and talks about the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zY2huZWlkZXItZWxlY3RyaWMuY29tL2IyYi9lbi9jYW1wYWlnbi9pbm5vdmF0aW9uL2luZHVzdHJpZXMuanNw&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=44388\">IoT<\/a>, connectivity, big data, the digital transformation and all the benefits we can derive from this innovative, new technology.<\/p>\n<p>These are exciting times for sure, and maybe even more exciting if you are like me and have been working in <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zY2huZWlkZXItZWxlY3RyaWMuY29tL2IyYi9lbi9wcm9kdWN0cy9hdXRvbWF0aW9uLWFuZC1jb250cm9sLmpzcA%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=44388\">industrial automation<\/a> for many years.\u00a0 Because what we are seeing today are things that we have been developing over many years now becoming embedded as part of mainstream, modern digital life.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_44389\" style=\"max-width: 248px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-44389 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/1-3-2018-4-19-33-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"238\" height=\"263\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Advertisement for the Modicon 584 PLC, 1985<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Without overloading you with technicalities, I\u2019m going to give a few examples of things industrial automation has been working on since the 1960s that are now part of today\u2019s digital transformation.<\/p>\n<p><strong>1.The birth of smart edge devices<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In 1968, along with a group of engineers, Richard Morley founded Bedford Associates and invented the first\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5zY2huZWlkZXItZWxlY3RyaWMuY29tL2VuL3Byb2R1Y3QtY2F0ZWdvcnkvMzkwMC1wYWMtLXBsYy0tLW90aGVyLWNvbnRyb2xsZXJzLw%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=44388\">programmable logic controller<\/a>, the 084. He then established Modicon the\u00a0company, deriving its name from MOdular DIgital CONtrol. There is a communication port here in this 984 PLC<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>3.\u00a0 IoT? Can you see the similarities to today\u2019s IIoT?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>4. Big Data?<br \/> <\/strong>Have you ever heard of plant historians? Predictive control?<\/strong><br \/> Model predictive control has been used in the resources industries since the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Blockchain?<\/strong><br \/> I need to confess this one challenged me, but as an automation person, some of the concepts seemed very familiar to voting processing in triple modular redundancy (TMR) systems.
