In those days, we would focus on the relationship between people, technology and management systems as the \u201cmagic\u201d that would lead to production improvement.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-44521\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/canstockphoto18657491-1-1024x856.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1024\" height=\"856\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/canstockphoto18657491-1-1024x856.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/canstockphoto18657491-1-300x251.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/canstockphoto18657491-1-768x642.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/canstockphoto18657491-1.jpg 1600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>I also use to particularly like the work of Ralph Rio from the industry analysts ARC, his\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2xpZGVzaGFyZS5uZXQvQUNoYXRoYS9yaW8tbGVhbm1lc2Jwb3JsMDhwcmludC12ZXJzaW9u&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=44519\">\u201cIntersection of Lean and MES Best Practices\u201d <\/a>is still online. Ralph pointed out that a key issue with lean manufacturing implementations was \u201cbacksliding\u201d.\u00a0 This is illustrated by his chart below&#8230;<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-44520\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/1-9-2018-2-04-49-PM.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"556\" height=\"382\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/1-9-2018-2-04-49-PM.jpg 556w, https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/01\/1-9-2018-2-04-49-PM-300x206.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 556px) 100vw, 556px\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>The basic idea is that while you can do a lot with just the 2 \u201cingredients\u201d of people and management systems (blue line), technology provides the mechanism that continues to drive improvement over time (green line). \u00a0With no technology to lock in the gains, improvements will inevitably deteriorate over time (red line). Everyone in the production game has seen this I\u2019m sure.<\/p>\n<p>I was reminded of Ralph\u2019s elegant chart when discussing digital transformation with several different customers in the last few weeks. \u00a0The \u201ctechnology\u201d piece is here today and available off the shelf, in the cloud, and as a service. We can start using it right now in alignment with the right people and management strategies.<\/p>\n<p>Both <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYmNnLmNvbS9lbi1hdS9wdWJsaWNhdGlvbnMvMjAxNy9pbmR1c3RyeS00LjAtbGVhbi1tYW51ZmFjdHVyaW5nLWZpdmUtbGVzc29ucy1mcm9udGxpbmVzLmFzcHg%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=44519\">BCG<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubWNraW5zZXkuY29tL2J1c2luZXNzLWZ1bmN0aW9ucy9vcGVyYXRpb25zL291ci1pbnNpZ2h0cy9pbmR1c3RyeS00LTAtZGVteXN0aWZpZWQtbGVhbnMtbmV4dC1sZXZlbA%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=44519\">McKinsey<\/a> have recently written excellent articles on the alignment of technology with management systems and people:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>BCG: <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYmNnLmNvbS9lbi1hdS9wdWJsaWNhdGlvbnMvMjAxNy9pbmR1c3RyeS00LjAtbGVhbi1tYW51ZmFjdHVyaW5nLWZpdmUtbGVzc29ucy1mcm9udGxpbmVzLmFzcHg%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=44519\"><em>&#8220;Leading companies are implementing these technologies to accelerate the business impact of operational improvement programs, such as lean management. In fact, frontrunners do not typically regard Industry 4.0 as a new production paradigm, but rather as a lever to maximize and accelerate the benefits of other programs.\u201d<\/em><\/a><\/li>\n<li>McKinsey: <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cubWNraW5zZXkuY29tL2J1c2luZXNzLWZ1bmN0aW9ucy9vcGVyYXRpb25zL291ci1pbnNpZ2h0cy9pbmR1c3RyeS00LTAtZGVteXN0aWZpZWQtbGVhbnMtbmV4dC1sZXZlbA%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=44519\"><em>&#8220;In other words, Industry 4.0 can be understood as digitally enabled lean. For example, companies have long optimized yield, energy, and throughput by improving process steering.
