On most odd days, for that matter. Yesterday, Thursday, was no exception. On March 22 we saw all of these new patches:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All three of the active versions of Win10 got cumulative updates \u2014 the second set in the past two weeks:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We also got Servicing Stack Updates for two of the three active versions of Win10:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t see any Servicing Stack update for 1709.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Windows 10 patches are stacking up like jets at JFK in a snowstorm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yesterday\u2019s cumulative update for Win10 Fall Creators Update, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4089848\/windows-10-update-kb4089848\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KB 4089848<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, has raised some red flags. It\u2019s still too early to say for sure if there are significant problems, but &#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poster yvrhnl on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/forums\/topic\/out-of-out-of-band-patches-for-win10-1709-1703-and-1607\/#post-177684\" rel=\"nofollow\">AskWoody reports<\/a>:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KB 4089848 disabled Start Menu, Notification Centre and Settings Menu. \u00a0After rollback all enabled again.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poster Robert in PA on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/windows_10-other_settings\/printing-issue-with-kb4089848\/c9aa6dbf-bf06-47a3-a1b9-53811a761793\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft Answers forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I installed the latest Windows 10 update &#8211; KB4089848 &#8211; today, 3\/22\/18. The update prevents my HP printer from printing. I deinstalled the update, and my printer started working again \u2026 HP LaserJet Pro MFP M426fdw I cannot print from any application when this KB is installed. \u00a0The error messages I receive are pop ups that disappear faster than I can write them down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Poster Washingtonian-in-SD on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/windows_10-update\/2018-03-cumulative-update-for-windows-10-version\/ea1fd51f-c008-471b-b352-62afb5b36a1a\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft Answers forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Update installed successfully (verified in Programs and Features); however, since it was installed, all information has been wiped from the installed update history from Windows Update. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yesterday, Microsoft also released two previews of upcoming Monthly Rollups:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Notably, distressingly, there\u2019s no preview of a Monthly Rollup for Win7. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3263645\/windows-pcs\/microsoft-stops-pushing-buggy-win7-patch-kb-4088875-hopefully-as-a-precursor-to-yanking-it.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may recall<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that this month\u2019s Monthly Rollup for Windows 7 and Server 2008 R2,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4088875\" rel=\"nofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KB 4088875<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and \u00a0the download-and-manually-install Security-only patch,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/mk-mk\/help\/4088878\/windows-7-update-kb4088878\" rel=\"nofollow\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KB 4088878<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, have triggered all sorts of problems. Microsoft <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4088875\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has acknowledged <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all of these problems:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Apparently in response to the multiple screw-ups, it looks like KB 4088875 now appears as an \u201cImportant\u201d update in the Windows Update list, but isn\u2019t checked by default, and doesn\u2019t install automatically, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/forums\/topic\/buggy-windows-7-monthly-rollup-kb-4088875-no-acknowledgment-from-microsoft\/#post-175907\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even with Automatic Update enabled<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I\u2019m seeing conflicting reports about whether KB 4088875 currently appears on the WSUS list.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To the best of my knowledge, Microsoft hasn\u2019t yet deigned to explain to us mortals what\u2019s going on with the botched patch \u2014 but there\u2019s no doubt that you should avoid it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t know what KB 4023057 actually does, but it\u2019s been implicated as the impetus of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3261969\/microsoft-windows\/microsoft-again-forced-upgrades-on-win10-machines-specifically-set-to-block-updates.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201caccidental\u201d forced upgrades <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from 1703 to 1709 \u2014 which happened even if 1703 was set to defer upgrades \u2014 that I reported on two weeks ago. Blame has fallen on a mysterious new, uh, feature called \u201cUpdate Assistant\u201d that bypasses Windows Update settings somehow, and this KB has been linked to the Update Assistant.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> On AskWoody, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/forums\/topic\/microsoft-releases-new-version-of-win10-patch-kb-4023057\/#post-174206\" rel=\"nofollow\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">poster abbodi86 says<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about an earlier version of KB 4023057:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It evolved from just fixing registry to restore tasks and fix drivers DB, and compatibilty for UAC management. The main purpose or function did not change: re-allow blocked or disabled Windows Update.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, Microsoft\u2019s official description is the usual \u201cNothing to see here, folks\u201d drivel:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This update includes reliability improvements that affect the update service components in Windows 10 Versions 1507, 1511, 1607, and 1703.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This update includes files and resources that address issues that affect the update processes in Windows 10. These improvements ensure that quality updates are installed seamlessly on your device and help to improve the reliability and security of devices running Windows 10. \u00a0When Windows update is available for your device, devices that do not have enough disk\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only certain builds of Windows 10 Versions 1507, 1511, 1607, and 1703 require this update. Devices that are running those builds will automatically get the update downloaded and installed through Windows Update.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This update is also offered directly to Windows Update Client for some devices that have not installed the most recent updates. This update is not offered from the Microsoft Update Catalog.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I just wish Microsoft would speak plainly. In this case, some Win10 users (not sure which ones) are getting a patch that (apparently?) breaks their wuauserv Windows Update server settings.
