At the time, I wondered out loud why the latest (unyanked) version of Win10, version 1803, didn\u2019t get a similar dose. Now, on a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3296006\/microsoft-windows\/the-mechanics-of-windows-patching-in-plain-english.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cD Week\u201d <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wednesday, it looks like we\u2019ve seen the deluge.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The late-to-the-party cumulative update <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4462933\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">KB 4462933<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> brings Win10 version 1803 up to build 17134.376. The patch is relatively unremarkable, except for the number of bugs that have been fixed \u2014 more than 50 are listed individually \u2014 and its odd appearance on a D Week Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s my theory. Microsoft is backporting bug fixes: When it finds a bug in version \u201cn\u201d and fixes it, it applies the fix to version \u201cn-1,\u201d \u00a0once the patch has the kinks worked out. I think we\u2019re seeing that play out big time with the ill-fated Win10 version 1809.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If my theory\u2019s correct, the massive number of fixes just released for 1803 includes many fixes for 1809, no doubt discovered during the full-court bug press currently under way on 1809. Those bug fixes have been deemed to be good enough for 1809, and they&#8217;ve been tested thoroughly. If that\u2019s the case, it bodes well for 1809 \u2014 when\/if we finally see it released.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That theory\u2019s seen an interesting example lately, by the way. The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/2018\/another-reported-file-wiping-problem-with-win10-1809\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data-destroying Zip bug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Win10 version 1809 has been fixed. But the fix hasn\u2019t (yet) appeared in 1809. Instead, it\u2019s been fixed in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/2018\/microsoft-admits-to-zip-file-wiping-bug-and-fixes-it-but-not-for-win10-1809-customers\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">latest build of the next-next version of Windows 19H1<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, build 18262, on Oct. 17. That, too, bodes well for 1809.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ve seen a few reports of problems with KB 4462933 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tenforums.com\/windows-10-news\/120400-cumulative-update-kb4462933-windows-10-v1803-build-17134-376-oct-24-a.html\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on TenForums<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. DaveWin, for example, has this observation:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I installed this last night and after a couple of non-responsive actions I just went back to the previous restore point.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One application wouldn&#8217;t launch and I could not show a drive&#8217;s folders in explorer. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As always, I would wait a while to install the 1803 cumulative update, until we\u2019ve heard from more intrepid users.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When will Win10 version 1809 drop? Er, re-re-drop? Good question. Given the indications mentioned before, I think Microsoft is (finally!) taking quality more seriously. Whether that will result in the \u201cOctober 2018 Update\u201d being released in October is anybody\u2019s guess. Don\u2019t forget that the last version, the \u201cApril 2018 Update\u201d \u2014 shipped on the last day of April.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The only hint I\u2019ve seen comes from the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/answers.microsoft.com\/en-us\/windows\/forum\/all\/if-you-copy-files-from-a-zip-file-without\/18c78dcb-8ec6-4d82-90c6-31b90a428fc7\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sole Answers Forum post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> acknowledging the data-destroying Zip bug:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Microsoft is working on a resolution and estimates a solution will be available in early November for this issue. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which would seem to indicate that 1809 isn\u2019t coming back to haunt us in time for Halloween.
