{"id":16064,"date":"2019-08-12T11:00:15","date_gmt":"2019-08-12T19:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palada.net\/index.php\/2019\/08\/12\/news-9807\/"},"modified":"2019-08-12T11:00:15","modified_gmt":"2019-08-12T19:00:15","slug":"news-9807","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.palada.net\/index.php\/2019\/08\/12\/news-9807\/","title":{"rendered":"Investing in Our Future by Mentoring Our Future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Credit to Author: Kevin Self| Date: Mon, 12 Aug 2019 12:00:31 +0000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The world\u2019s biggest problems need strong STEM educated women and men to solve them.<\/p>\n<p><em>So how can we develop our next generation of problem solvers?\u00a0 <\/em><\/p>\n<p>Personally, I believe organizations like FIRST Robotics are the best solution to truly create the problem solvers of the future.\u00a0 FIRST engages young girls and boys to work <em>collaboratively <\/em>to solve problems.\u00a0 Their robotics programs begin in grade school with Legos, up through high school where students build and program 100+ pound robots.\u00a0 But it\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=mtE6Va6oOhU\">more than just robots<\/a>.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t use kids to build robots. I use robots to build kids.\u201d<br \/> &#8211; Dean Kamen,<br \/> Founder of FIRST Robotics<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>FIRST is a global program, with 550,000+ students in over 100 countries.\u00a0 FIRST unites students of all cultural backgrounds on the laws of physics, math, and science.\u00a0 It provides a playing field where they can work together, teach other, and come to a solution based on these scientific principles.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59352\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59352\" class=\"wp-image-59352 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Dean-and-Kevin_2018-crop-217x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"217\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Dean-and-Kevin_2018-crop-217x300.jpg 217w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Dean-and-Kevin_2018-crop-768x1060.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Dean-and-Kevin_2018-crop-742x1024.jpg 742w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 217px) 100vw, 217px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-59352\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Dean Kamen, founder of FIRST, and I<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4><strong>What is FIRST?<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.firstinspires.org\">FIRST Robotics<\/a>, where FIRST stands for \u201cFor Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology\u201d was founded in 1989 by Dean Kamen.\u00a0 Dean has held many titles over the years including serial inventor, owner of 440 patents, inventor of the Segway, inventor of Slingshot, inventor of the I-Bot, and founder of DEKA Research &amp; Development.\u00a0 Dean connected with Dr. Woodie Flowers (MIT emeritus professor) because he saw a great gap in the supply of STEM educated students with the demand of these positions in the coming future.\u00a0 He also saw the US schools \u201coverly\u201d celebrating athletics and NOT celebrating academics.\u00a0 So, he devised an organization where \u201call participants can turn pro\u201d and FIRST Robotics was born.<\/p>\n<h4><strong>My Involvement with FIRST \u2013 \u201cA Family Affair\u201d<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I became engaged with FIRST in 2001 when my then 9-year old came home from school and said we needed to start a FIRST Robotics team\u2026 with Legos.\u00a0 I became the lead mentor and my long term FIRST relationship began.\u00a0 My wife also became involved, and our 3 sons all became very engaged with FIRST and <em>ALL<\/em> say their experience with FIRST was a critical part of their choice to become engineers:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Rob: Now works as an engineer at Ford Motor Company and sits on Ford\u2019s FIRST board of directors. He also recruits additional Ford engineers to sponsor teams and mentor Detroit Public School students in FIRST programs.<\/li>\n<li>Zach: Now an engineer at Milwaukee Tool who is working hard to build a FIRST community within his company. He mentored a rookie team this past year that made it to the Wisconsin state championships.<\/li>\n<li>Joey: A sophomore college engineering student who participated on teams throughout middle and high school and mentored a team while in high school. He\u2019s interning this summer at DEKA Research &amp; Development.<\/li>\n<li>Louisa: My wife has been a FIRST mentor for the past 12 years \u2013 starting multiple new teams during that time period and being the driving force behind our local K-8 school\u2019s ambition to build out a Robotics\/Technology Laboratory.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>I joined Schneider Electric in 2015 and early on found a couple of our VERY passionate FIRST mentors.\u00a0 We realized that for Schneider to remain competitive in the talent market, we MUST be engaging these \u201cfuture colleagues\u201d at an earlier age.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59351\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59351\" class=\"wp-image-59351 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/WI_State_Inspire_2019-crop-300x203.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"203\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/WI_State_Inspire_2019-crop-300x203.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/WI_State_Inspire_2019-crop-768x520.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/WI_State_Inspire_2019-crop-1024x694.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/WI_State_Inspire_2019-crop.jpg 1594w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-59351\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Knack team with their Inspire Award at the Wisconsin Championships<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4><strong>Companies Should Be Involved in STEM Organizations<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>I can think of many reasons why companies should be proactive in engaging young leaders to pursue an interest in STEM.\u00a0 From a business standpoint, an affiliation with FIRST strongly promotes our company brand (globally), generates strong awareness with students about Schneider Electric and our focus in the STEM fields, and draws us very close with key customers.<\/p>\n<p>But the reason to be involved goes far beyond brand promotion. Schneider is committed to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.schneider-electric.com\/ww\/en\/documents\/Sustainability\/2019\/01\/schneider-sustainability-report-2017-2018-tcm50-468214.pdf\">sustainability<\/a> and carbon neutrality.\u00a0 We believe meaningful action is the only path to a sustainable world. \u00a0Every day we\u2019re reminded of the urgency of the climate crisis and inspired by those who are rising to meet the challenge head on. \u00a0Limiting global temperature rise is essential if we are to avoid widespread, disastrous ecological problems.<\/p>\n<p><strong>And these massive global problems are why we need talented, smart, STEM educated women and men to help solve them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Concrete, meaningful action is the only successful path to create a healthier world, and that is why programs like FIRST are so important.\u00a0 We need to educate these children, our future colleagues, to set them up for success, and inspire them to innovate, create, and build a more sustainable world.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_59353\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-59353\" class=\"wp-image-59353 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Detroit-World-Championships-April-2019-The-Knack-meeting-with-Dean-Kamen-crop-300x202.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"202\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Detroit-World-Championships-April-2019-The-Knack-meeting-with-Dean-Kamen-crop-300x202.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Detroit-World-Championships-April-2019-The-Knack-meeting-with-Dean-Kamen-crop-768x518.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/Detroit-World-Championships-April-2019-The-Knack-meeting-with-Dean-Kamen-crop.jpg 883w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/p>\n<p id=\"caption-attachment-59353\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Knack poses with Dean Kamen at the Detroit World Championships in April 2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h4><strong>Schneider Electric\u2019s Involvement<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p>When I joined Schneider, we began to search out other mentors to get involved with FIRST.\u00a0 When Schneider began officially sponsoring FIRST in 2016, we sponsored 16 teams.\u00a0 Over the years our monetary support and our number of sponsored teams have grown.\u00a0 In the 2018-2019 school year, we donated $150,000 to over 46 teams, a 64% increase over the prior year.<\/p>\n<p>Here are just a few great stories of our teams:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In April of 2018 and 2019, multiple Schneider Electric sponsored teams competed in the Detroit and Houston FIRST Robotics World Championships. The FTC Team 9956 \u201cThe Knack\u201d performed well at the Detroit Championships, winning the \u201cmascot award\u201d and advancing to the competition\u2019s semi-final round.\u00a0 The team, which is focused on growing STEM awareness and education in Wisconsin had met with WI Governor Tony Evers earlier in the year advocating for increased STEM education funding in WI schools. \u00a0At the Detroit Championships, the team was able to meet with Dean Kamen to update him on their efforts!\u00a0 Also, for the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> year in a row, The Knack built a robot that threw out a first pitch at a Milwaukee Brewers baseball game this past June! (and of course, it was a perfect strike!)<\/li>\n<li>The GONK Squad (#701), from North Kingstown, Rhode Island and ARC Thunder (#5273) from Andover, MA both advanced to the 2019 Worlds Competition in Detroit for the first time.<br \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-59360 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/The-GONK-Squad-Worlds-Competition-in-Detroit-2019-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/The-GONK-Squad-Worlds-Competition-in-Detroit-2019-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/The-GONK-Squad-Worlds-Competition-in-Detroit-2019-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/The-GONK-Squad-Worlds-Competition-in-Detroit-2019.jpg 800w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>CRyptonite FRC Team (#624) competed at the FIRST World Championship (their fifth competition of the season) and after 10 incredibly hard-played qualification matches, came in 13 out of 67 teams in the Newton Division.\u00a0 They also won the \u201cAutomation Award sponsored by Ford\u201d for programing, which acknowledges the team\u2019s automation strategy is at the highest global levels.\u00a0 CRyptonite is also coordinating with local FLL teams, such as the Brainiac Maniacs, to host various free Robotics summer camps, such as an Introduction to FLL, Girls in STEM workshop and FLL Coach\u2019s Tips &amp; Tricks.<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-59363 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/FRC-Team-624-CRyptonite-crop-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"181\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/FRC-Team-624-CRyptonite-crop-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/FRC-Team-624-CRyptonite-crop-768x463.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/FRC-Team-624-CRyptonite-crop-1024x617.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/08\/FRC-Team-624-CRyptonite-crop.jpg 1100w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>In Texas, The Brainiac Mainiacs team advanced to the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/life-at-schneider-electric\/2018\/04\/05\/first-lego-league-championship\/\">2018 FIRST Lego League World Championships<\/a> and in 2019 they advanced to the Regional Championship for the 8th year in a row and were awarded the 3rd place <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/life-at-schneider-electric\/2019\/08\/05\/there-is-no-i-in-lego-part-i\/\">Champion\u2019s Award<\/a>.<br \/> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-58576 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Regional-Championship-e1563224494714-277x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"226\" height=\"245\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Regional-Championship-e1563224494714-277x300.jpg 277w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Regional-Championship-e1563224494714-768x833.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Regional-Championship-e1563224494714-944x1024.jpg 944w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Regional-Championship-e1563224494714-130x140.jpg 130w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/Regional-Championship-e1563224494714.jpg 1448w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 226px) 100vw, 226px\" \/><\/li>\n<li>Big Bad Bob FRC Team (#319) celebrated their 20<sup>th<\/sup> anniversary year this season breaking several of their own records at the World Championships in Detroit. Out of the 68 teams on the Daly Field, BOB ranked the #1 seed in the Daly Subdivision with <a href=\"https:\/\/frc-events.firstinspires.org\/2019\/DALY\/rankings\">9 Wins, 1 Loss and 0 Ties<\/a>.\u00a0 Ranked #4 for placing the most cargo, ranked #6 for placing the most hatch panels and ranked #14 over all out of 408 teams at the world\u2019s competition.\u00a0 Team 4970 presented BOB with a homemade metal trophy for the Best Cargo Robot.\u00a0 Team 1718 presented BOB with a 3D printed trophy for Ludicrous Speed.
