Many of Microsoft&#8217;s Extended Security Update program details aren&#8217;t clear to me \u2014 How does a very small business buy ESU? Why is Microsoft releasing Edge on Win7 the day after it goes end-of-life? Will that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3489042\/patch-tuesday-brings-a-reprise-of-the-autopilot-debacle-now-quashed-and-another-win7-nag.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new full-screen nag<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> keep coming back?\u00a0\u2014 but there\u2019s one loose end that sits in the middle of my confusion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will Microsoft <\/span><strong><i>really <\/i><\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stop pushing malware signature files to Microsoft Security Essentials on Jan. 14?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I&#8217;ve been wondering about that since I read in the<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4057281\/windows-7-support-will-end-on-january-14-2020\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Extended Support FAQ<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Will Microsoft Security Essentials continue to protect my PC after end of support?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, your Windows 7 PC will not be protected by Microsoft Security Essentials (MSE) after January 14, 2020. This product is unique to Windows 7 and follows the same lifecycle dates for support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The wording has me all tied up. If you pay for Extended Support, doesn&#8217;t that, by definition, extend the Win7 lifecycle date? And if the lifecycle date is extended, wouldn\u2019t MSE follow the same extended lifecycle date?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gregg Keizer had an excellent<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3489036\/microsoft-to-end-updates-to-windows-7s-free-av-software-security-essentials.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">article in <em>Computerworld<\/em><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a few days ago on this same topic. He talked about how MSE updates would stop on Jan. 14, even for those paying for Extended Support.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Computerworld<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> previously speculated that Microsoft would provide updates to MSE even after Windows 7&#8217;s retirement, slated for Jan. 14. The forecast was based on Microsoft&#8217;s behavior five years ago, when it<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/2487771\/microsoft-retreats-from-xp-s-antivirus-kill-notice.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kept cranking out malware signature updates for Windows XP<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> users of MSE in the months after that operating system&#8217;s April 2014 retirement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A bit of history here.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Back when Windows XP was about to hit end-of-life on April 8, 2014, we were treated to a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pcmag.com\/news\/319689\/when-windows-xp-dies-so-does-its-microsoft-security-essent\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">deluge of dire warnings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, saying that MSE updates would die on the same date that XP hit the skids.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That didn\u2019t happen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, Microsoft kept releasing MSE signature files for XP until the last one appeared 15 months later, on July 14, 2015.\u00a0Microsoft <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/14223\/windows-xp-end-of-support\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">blocked downloading <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">MSE on XP machines on April 8, 2014\u00a0\u2014 you had to jump through some hoops to install MSE on XP machines after that\u00a0\u2014 but those with MSE installed on WinXP machines got<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/2487771\/microsoft-retreats-from-xp-s-antivirus-kill-notice.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a015 months of official, free updates<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, whether they paid for extended support on XP or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was expecting a replay of the XP scenario. (Still do, frankly.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Soooo \u2026 has anybody out there seen a definitive statement from Microsoft that it\u2019ll cut off MSE signature file updates on Jan. 14? Not some mealy-mouthed pabulum about lifecycle dates and extended support.
