Welcome to the family.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Right now, we have a promise that Microsoft will fix the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3516313\/microsoft-blinks-again-promises-to-clean-up-after-its-win7-stretch-black-screen-mess.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cStretch\u201d wallpaper bug<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it rolled out last month, and there\u2019s some hope that it will fix the Internet Explorer JScript engine security hole CVE-2020-0674 noted last month in Security Advisory ADV200001. We don\u2019t know how\/when the fix(es) will be distributed, or if Microsoft will soften its \u201cno free Win7 patches after January 14\u201d edict in some other way.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Other than that, Win7 customers are on their own\u00a0\u2014 you either pay for a year of Extended Support, get your machine locked down and pray for Microsoft\u2019s largess, or just throw the old doorstop away.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In December, Gregg Keizer <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3505907\/just-because-microsoft-sells-windows-7-support-doesnt-mean-you-can-buy-it.html\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wrote about the alternative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u2014 buy an Extended Security Update license from a cloud service provider. Just one little problem:\u00a0CSPs aren\u2019t set up to sell licenses by the ones and twos. It\u2019s a manually intensive process that simply doesn\u2019t pay for the effort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One CSP I know has risen to the occasion, offering to get licenses for small businesses, even businesses with just one PC. Amy Babinchak, who owns Harbor Computer Services, puts it this way: \u201cWe want to make it as easy as possible for as many businesses as possible to continue receiving Windows 7 patches. It\u2019s a manual process, so expect some delays, but we\u2019ll try our best to get every machine with a valid Win7 Pro or Ultimate license hooked into the Extended Security Update system.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Patch Lady Susan Bradley has been following the procedure intently and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.askwoody.com\/2020\/patch-lady-windows-7-esu-lessons\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">offers these tips<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If your system\u2019s up to it, and you don\u2019t mind parting with $70 or so, you can fill out <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/forms.office.com\/Pages\/ResponsePage.aspx?id=CEtIRBCvwEyPI4AgwsgbpPcTYf1jGDxMoOAm3rKwHJVUOTg0M1JXSUJKQjREMElWODdXQ1FVS0tDVy4u\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Harbor Computer Services\u2019 License Request and Payment form<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and give it a whirl. As Bradley notes:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A healthy Win7 machine should have no problem installing the ESU key and activating it.\u00a0 A not so healthy one \u2026 you may have to manually install missing updates and run the Windows update troubleshooter to get it to a healthy condition.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The first Extended Security Update should arrive next Tuesday, although we don\u2019t have an official announcement just yet. Now would be a good time to fill out the form, if you want to keep your &#8220;genuine&#8221; Win7 Pro or Ultimate machine officially patched.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Questions?
