The Forum&#8217;s mission, as I understood it, was to improve the state of the world by bringing together leaders across industries and society \u2013 a pretty lofty goal!<\/p>\n<p>What I didn\u2019t know is that the WEF has numerous platforms, councils, communities, and workgroups that are all dedicated to the same goal. I was pleased to find out 5G was high on the Forum\u2019s radar when they contacted me a few months ago and said they were forming a 5G workgroup comprised of stakeholders across the next gen telco ecosystem. I was more pleased when they asked me to join this group, the World Economic Forum\u2019s 5G-Next Generation Networks Programme, and I happily accepted.<\/p>\n<p>It was an exciting invitation for me because I\u2019d spend the prior six months researching and collaborating on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/datacenter\/2019\/04\/29\/how-data-centres-will-breathe-life-into-5g\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data center architecture needed for 5G.<\/a> I wanted to share what I\u2019d learned with a broader group and collaborate further with the members of this programme. I was also interested in participating in the cross-industry workshops planned for London, Singapore, and Silicon Valley.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-64079\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/datacenterarch.png\" alt=\"Data Center Architecture needed for next generation telco consists of edge to core\" width=\"768\" height=\"431\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/datacenterarch.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/datacenterarch-300x168.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 768px) 100vw, 768px\" \/> <\/p>\n<h2>Sharpening Our 5G Focus<\/h2>\n<p>The first workshop was held in London and focused on three areas:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>sharing knowledge on 5G\/next gen mobile technologies, as well as enterprise use cases and experiences;<\/li>\n<li>understanding implications for enterprises and ecosystem players looking to innovate in the 5G era;<\/li>\n<li>exploring cross-industry collaborative opportunities with objectives and impact areas across three domains: industry, society, and government.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The first output from the 5G-Next Generation Networks Programme is a <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_The_Impact_of_5G.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cRepository of 5G Use Cases,\u201d\u00a0<\/a> that features 5G case studies from Korea Telecom, Ericsson, Nokia, Ford, Lyft, and others. Schneider Electric\u2019s use case is featured on pages 31 and 32 with the topic of Metro\/Regional and Local Mobile Edge Cloud (MEC) buildout. Highlights include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>the need to deploy an architecture of data centers that includes core, regional\/metro mobile edge cloud, and local mobile edge cloud;<\/li>\n<li>the need for 7.5 million standalone 5G towers with base stations including MEC (mobile edge cloud) in the future;<\/li>\n<li>a description of the ecosystem players driving 5G.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-64080\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/5Gpost.png\" alt=\"metro\/regional and local mobile edge cloud buildout 5G\" width=\"974\" height=\"547\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/5Gpost.png 974w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/5Gpost-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/5Gpost-768x431.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 974px) 100vw, 974px\" \/> <\/p>\n<h2><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-64082\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/schneider-blog-3.png\" alt=\"metro\/regional and local mobile edge cloud buildout 5G-landscape\" width=\"975\" height=\"548\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/schneider-blog-3.png 975w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/schneider-blog-3-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.se.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/schneider-blog-3-768x432.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 975px) 100vw, 975px\" \/><\/h2>\n<h2>Hope for Finding the \u201cKiller App\u201d for 5G<\/h2>\n<p>In addition to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www3.weforum.org\/docs\/WEF_The_Impact_of_5G.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cRepository of 5G Use Cases,\u201d<\/a> a white paper called <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/whitepapers\/the-impact-of-5g-creating-new-value-across-industries-and-society\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">\u201cThe Impact of 5G: Creating New Value across Industries and Society\u201d<\/a> is also available. Schneider Electric collaborated on the content and provided a manufacturing-based case study:<\/p>\n<p><strong>Case Study<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Schneider Electric plans to leverage 5G to simplify factory IT operations, improve support to manufacturing, and accelerate factory digitization. 5G demonstrations at Schneider Electric\u2019s Le Vaudreuil factory leverage low latency and high throughput and secure indoor coverage to validate a range of use cases along various aspects. These include:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>enhancing the operational efficiency of field maintenance technicians through content delivery and seamless assistance from remote experts;<\/li>\n<li>enabling Schneider customers to remotely tour the factory with a telepresence robot;<\/li>\n<li>enabling Automated Guided Vehicles (AGV) in the factory to send video streams and sensors and receive real-time instructions to perform tasks not programmed in AGVs.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>As the group moves forward, programme members will continue to collaborate and we are confident we will identify the \u201ckiller app\u201d that will drive deployment and adoption of 5G. At Schneider Electric, we are also collaborating on establishing cooperative models for infrastructure investment. Topics under discussion include policy impact and stakeholder mapping (smart cities), business\/revenue models, infrastructure investment ecosystem, etc. Subsequent to the Forum\u2019s next workshops, look for new 5G content to be published.
