{"id":8378,"date":"2017-07-18T11:00:08","date_gmt":"2017-07-18T19:00:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.palada.net\/index.php\/2017\/07\/18\/news-2152\/"},"modified":"2017-07-18T11:00:08","modified_gmt":"2017-07-18T19:00:08","slug":"news-2152","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.palada.net\/index.php\/2017\/07\/18\/news-2152\/","title":{"rendered":"Mid-Year Market Report: Renewables Show No Signs of Slowdown"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Credit to Author: John Powers| Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2017 17:40:01 +0000<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Heading into 2017, there was tremendous speculation about how the incoming U.S. administration would impact energy policy and development, and particularly the ramifications on worldwide renewables investment and deployment.<\/h3>\n<p>Mid-year, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5yZW5ld2FibGVjaG9pY2UuY29tL2Jsb2ctb3V0bG9vay1mb3ItcmVuZXdhYmxlcy1pbi0yMDE3Lw%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">as we predicted<\/a>, renewables are still full steam ahead, even in the U.S., and despite the Trump administration\u2019s highly publicized withdrawal from the Paris Agreement (if anything, the withdrawal has <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuc2NpZW50aWZpY2FtZXJpY2FuLmNvbS9hcnRpY2xlL3RydW1wLWlnbml0ZXMtY2xpbWF0ZS1wbGVkZ2VzLXdpdGgtcGFyaXMtd2l0aGRyYXdhbC8%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">catalyzed further action<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudGhlZ3VhcmRpYW4uY29tL3dvcmxkLzIwMTcvanVsLzA4L2cyMC1jbGltYXRlLWNoYW5nZS1sZWFkZXJzLXN0YXRlbWVudC1wYXJpcy1hZ3JlZW1lbnQ%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">solidified global commitments<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>Consider:<\/p>\n<h2>1. Renewables continue to break global records for both capacity and generation:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>IRENA reports that renewable installations <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5jbmJjLmNvbS8yMDE3LzAzLzMwL3JlbmV3YWJsZXMtYnJlYWstcmVjb3Jkcy1hcy13aW5kLWFuZC1zb2xhci1jb21lLW9ubGluZS1pbnRlcm5hdGlvbmFsLXJlbmV3YWJsZS1lbmVyZ3ktYWdlbmN5LXNheXMuaHRtbA%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">increased by 161GW in 2016<\/a>, a 9% increase over 2015, and a new record. Nearly half of this new capacity came in the form of solar.<\/li>\n<li>In March, renewables <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYmxvb21iZXJnLmNvbS9uZXdzL2FydGljbGVzLzIwMTctMDYtMTQvcmVuZXdhYmxlcy1wcm92aWRlLWEtcmVjb3JkLTEwLXBlcmNlbnQtb2YtdS1zLXBvd2VyLWluLW1hcmNo&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">crossed the double-digit threshold<\/a> for generation in the U.S. for the first time, surpassing 10%, while in the U.K., wind and solar records were both smashed earlier this summer, as the national grid exceeded the 50% mark. California alone\u2014the world\u2019s 6th largest economy\u2014reached <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5pbmRlcGVuZGVudC5jby51ay9uZXdzL3dvcmxkL2FtZXJpY2FzL2NhbGlmb3JuaWEtcmVuZXdhYmxlLWVuZXJneS1yZWNvcmQtODAtcGVyLWNlbnQtc3RhdGUtcG93ZXItZ3JlZW4tbWV0aG9kcy13YXRlci1oeWRyby13aW5kLXNvbGFyLWE3NzQ4OTU2Lmh0bWw%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">80% renewable generation<\/a> in May.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>2. They\u2019re doing so because the price continues to fall:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>At the beginning of the year, BNEF reported that<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYmxvb21iZXJnLmNvbS9uZXdzL2FydGljbGVzLzIwMTYtMTItMTUvd29ybGQtZW5lcmd5LWhpdHMtYS10dXJuaW5nLXBvaW50LXNvbGFyLXRoYXQtcy1jaGVhcGVyLXRoYW4td2luZA%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\"> solar is now the cheapest form of electricity<\/a> in 58 countries, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cuYmxvb21iZXJnLmNvbS9uZXdzL2FydGljbGVzLzIwMTctMDYtMDEvY2hlYXBlci1zb2xhci1pbi1pbmRpYS1wcm9tcHRzLXJldGhpbmstZm9yLW1vcmUtY29hbC1wcm9qZWN0cw%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">including India<\/a>. These low prices are allowing developing countries to leapfrog fossil fuels entirely\u2014and even bypass wind.<\/li>\n<li>In India and Australia, <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy53aW5kcG93ZXJtb250aGx5LmNvbS9hcnRpY2xlLzE0MzE0NTMvd2luZGVjb25vbWljcy1hdWN0aW9ucy1jb250aW51ZS13aW5kLXByaWNlcy1mYWxs&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">recent auctions<\/a> have delivered a wind price lower than all other generation sources (with fierce competition from solar PV). Continuing advancements in technology\u2014including <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy50ZWxlZ3JhcGguY28udWsvYnVzaW5lc3MvMjAxNy8wNS8xNi93b3JsZHMtbGFyZ2VzdC13aW5kLXR1cmJpbmVzLW1heS1kb3VibGUtc2l6ZS0yMDI0Lw%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">turbine size<\/a> and siting\u2014will further drive down prices, even with the impending reduction or removal of subsidies in some markets.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>3. These favorable conditions are attracting some unlikely allies:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Economics are driving U.S. utility Xcel Energy to double-down on renewables, calling its ambitious goals the \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy51dGlsaXR5ZGl2ZS5jb20vbmV3cy9zdGVlbC1mb3ItZnVlbC14Y2VsLWNlby1iZW4tZm93a2Utb24taGlzLXV0aWxpdHlzLW1vdmUtdG8tYS1yZW5ld2FibGUtYy80NDY3OTEv&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">steel-for-fuel<\/a>\u201d strategy. The company expects wind to be its predominant energy source by 2021.<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL2VuZXJneXBvc3QuZXUvdGhlLXN1cnByaXNpbmctbmV3LWVuZXJneS1zaWRlLW9mLXNoZWxsLw%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">Shell is investing<\/a> in technology, new energy, demand side management, and even renewables, via Glasspoint, an Omani solar steam generator manufacturer.<\/li>\n<li>Alphabet, parent of Google\u2014already the U.S.\u2019s largest commercial purchaser of renewable energy\u2014announced the \u201cgraduation\u201d of geothermal energy startup <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5jbmJjLmNvbS8yMDE3LzA3LzA2L2dvb2dsZS14LWxhdW5jaGVzLWRhbmRlbGlvbi1hLWdlb3RoZXJtYWwtZW5lcmd5LXN0YXJ0dXAuaHRtbA%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">Dandelion <\/a>from its \u201cX\u201d incubator, while C&amp;I commitment to and purchasing of renewables continues to rise.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>4. And expanding global markets:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5hZnIuY29tL25ld3MvcG9saXRpY3MvY29tcGFuaWVzLWhpdC1oYXJkLWJ5LXNwaXJhbGxpbmctd2hvbGVzYWxlLXBvd2VyLXByaWNlcy0yMDE3MDcwNi1neDVwamk%2FYnRpcw%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">Dramatic increases<\/a> in wholesale power prices in Australia are driving rapidly growing interest in renewables.<\/li>\n<li>On the heels of record-breaking investment in renewables, China has issued its first allotment of <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5yZW5ld2FibGVlbmVyZ3l3b3JsZC5jb20vYXJ0aWNsZXMvMjAxNy8wNy9jaGluYS1pc3N1ZXMtZmlyc3QtYWxsb3RtZW50LW9mLWdyZWVuLXBvd2VyLXRyYWRpbmctY2VydGlmaWNhdGVzLXRvLTIwLXJlbmV3YWJsZS1lbmVyZ3ktcHJvamVjdHMuaHRtbA%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">Green Power Trading Certificates<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>Favorable subsidies in India through the end of March 2018 <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cDovL3d3dy5yZW5ld2FibGVjaG9pY2UuY29tL2Jsb2ctZ2xvYmFsLXNwb3RsaWdodC1jbGVhbi10ZWNoLW9wcG9ydHVuaXRpZXMtaW4taW5kaWEv&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">continue to entice corporate buyers<\/a> with operations based on the subcontinent.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>What remains for 2017 is yet to be seen. There are still unknowns to emerge from U.S. energy policy, Brexit-related stalls in U.K. policy, and how grids around the world will deal with the renewables disruption\u2014not to mention Elon Musk\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudGhlZ3VhcmRpYW4uY29tL2F1c3RyYWxpYS1uZXdzLzIwMTcvanVsLzA3L3Rlc2xhLXRvLWJ1aWxkLXdvcmxkcy1iaWdnZXN0LWxpdGhpdW0taW9uLWJhdHRlcnktaW4tc291dGgtYXVzdHJhbGlh&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">audacious ambition <\/a>to build the world\u2019s largest lithium-ion battery in South Australia to improve the stability of the electricity grid in that country.<\/p>\n<p>However, there is growing consensus that <strong><em>\u201cthe renewables train has left the station\u201d<\/em><\/strong>. The strength of favorable economics amid growing climate concerns and commitments means that a renewable future is inevitable, particularly as <a href=\"http:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/?feed-stats-url=aHR0cHM6Ly93d3cudGhlZ3VhcmRpYW4uY29tL2Vudmlyb25tZW50LzIwMTcvanVuLzEzL2NvYWwtZ2xvYmFsLWRlbWFuZC1mYWxscy0yMDE2LXNlY29uZC15ZWFyLWluLXJvdy1mb3NzaWwtZnVlbA%3D%3D&#038;feed-stats-url-post-id=39466\">coal continues to decline<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This remains great news for C&amp;I buyers, who continue to purchase renewables in record volumes.
