{"id":9974,"date":"2017-10-19T05:45:05","date_gmt":"2017-10-19T13:45:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.palada.net\/index.php\/2017\/10\/19\/news-3747\/"},"modified":"2017-10-19T05:45:05","modified_gmt":"2017-10-19T13:45:05","slug":"news-3747","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.palada.net\/index.php\/2017\/10\/19\/news-3747\/","title":{"rendered":"Destroy Oil Pipelines as a Thunderbird in this New Video Game"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Credit to Author: Jacob Dub\u00e9| Date: Thu, 19 Oct 2017 13:00:00 +0000<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thunderbirdstrike.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"><i>Thunderbird Strike<\/i><\/a>, a new side-scrolling game that launches at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imaginenative.org\/thunderbirdstrike-game\" target=\"_blank\">ImagineNATIVE<\/a> festival this week in Toronto, players can control a thunderbird\u2014a symbol in several Indigenous cultures\u2014that destroys as much of the oil industry&#8217;s machinery and pipelines as it possibly can. And it&#8217;s so <i> satisfying<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The game was created by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.elizabethlapensee.com\/about\/\" target=\"_blank\">Elizabeth LaPens\u00e9e<\/a>, an Anishinaabe, M\u00e9tis, and Irish games developer, and assistant professor of media and information at Michigan State University. She told me in an interview that she wanted to create a game where Indigenous players could reclaim some agency around oil pipelines, even if through a video game.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Especially when we&#8217;re talking in the context of pipelines, and the oil industry, there are some wins we can have. But ultimately protectors will be pushed out and the processes are going to move forward. It&#8217;s happening with mining and it&#8217;s happening with pipelines,&#8221; LaPens\u00e9e told me over the phone. <\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 576px;\" data-iframely-id=\"MW7m1gq\" class=\"article__embed article__embed--iframely\">\n<div style=\"left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\" data-iframely-smart-iframe=\"true\"><iframe  src= width=\"100%\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" ><\/iframe> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><i>A scene from Thunderbird Strike. You control a big greenish-blue thunderbird\u2014hand-drawn and animated in what LaPens\u00e9e calls a traditional <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cedarhilllonghouse.ca\/blog\/what-woodland-art\" target=\"_blank\">woodland<\/a> style\u2014that flies around the screen and charges up electricity. Players can use its thunder to destroy vehicles and construction sites, or they can use it to restore the local wolf, caribou, and buffalo populations. Since it&#8217;s impossible to lose the game\u2014only garner higher and higher scores\u2014LaPens\u00e9e said players can experience it however they want. &#8220;The game doesn&#8217;t judge you,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<p>Accompanied by music from <a href=\"http:\/\/nwtarts.com\/artist-profile\/casey-koyczan\" target=\"_blank\">Casey Koyczan<\/a>, who also does the <i> Street-Fighter-II<\/i>-esque voiceover work, the three levels depict Alberta&#8217;s oil sands, then the prairies of Saskatchewan (where pipelines are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/saskatoon\/work-begins-enbridge-pipeline-replacement-1.4235810\" target=\"_blank\">currently being built<\/a>), before finally reaching the Straits of Mackinac, the waterway that connects Lake Huron and Lake Michigan. <\/p>\n<p>When players reach the final level, they fight the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.enbridge.com\/projects-and-infrastructure\/public-awareness\/line-5-michigan\/about-line-5\" target=\"_blank\">Enbridge Line 5<\/a> pipeline under the Straits of Mackinac, now transformed into a huge metallic snake. <\/p>\n<div class=\"article__media\"><picture class=\"article__image\"><source media=\"(max-width: 25em)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1508347499677-Screenshot-27.png?resize=400:*, https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1508347499677-Screenshot-27.png?resize=600:* 2x\"><source media=\"(max-width: 40.625em)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1508347499677-Screenshot-27.png?resize=650:*, https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1508347499677-Screenshot-27.png?resize=975:* 2x\"><source media=\"(max-width: 53.125em)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1508347499677-Screenshot-27.png?resize=850:*, https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1508347499677-Screenshot-27.png?resize=1275:* 2x\"><source media=\"(max-width: 65.625em)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1508347499677-Screenshot-27.png?resize=1050:*, https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1508347499677-Screenshot-27.png?resize=1575:* 2x\"><source media=\"(min-width: 65.625em)\" srcset=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1508347499677-Screenshot-27.png?resize=1050:*, https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1508347499677-Screenshot-27.png?resize=1575:* 2x\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/video-images.vice.com\/_uncategorized\/1508347499677-Screenshot-27.png\" alt=\"\"><\/picture>\n<div class=\"article__image-caption\">Image: Elizabeth LaPens\u00e9e<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Though the game illustrates concerns about pipelines as a whole, LaPens\u00e9e said <i> Thunderbird Strike <\/i>is focused on advocating for the removal of the controversial <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=ic9NcKtEPGs\" target=\"_blank\">Enbridge Line 5<\/a> pipeline specifically. Motherboard <a href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/4x3j4d\/the-aging-oil-pipelines-below-the-great-lakes\">previously reported<\/a> that if the 64-year-old pipeline were to rupture, it would spill 1.5 million gallons of oil into the water.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;That needs to be discontinued,&#8221; she said. &#8220;Any kind of leakage there would cause great destruction.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>LaPens\u00e9e has been making games for years. When she was a teenager, she created an Indigenous version of <i> Super Mario Bros.<\/i> by changing Mario&#8217;s sprite to portray an Indigenous character, and added a thunderbird power-up in the backend of an emulated version of the NES game. According to the story, thunderbirds were a clan of people who were asked to return to the waters because the lightning from their eyes would kill others. <\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 576px;\" data-iframely-id=\"Gc2sDfv\" class=\"article__embed article__embed--iframely\">\n<div style=\"left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\" data-iframely-smart-iframe=\"true\"><iframe  src= width=\"100%\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" ><\/iframe> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p><i>GIF: Elizabeth LaPens\u00e9e<\/i><\/p>\n<p>LaPens\u00e9e said it&#8217;s a representation of people who are very intense and quick to action. But now, the the thunderbird is being used as a symbol in protests. It has also been represented through art by <a href=\"http:\/\/survivance.org\/thunderbird-woman-and-her-eggs-isaac-murdoch-2016\/\" target=\"_blank\">Isaac Murdoch<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/justseeds.org\/no-pipelines-on-indigenous-land\/\" target=\"_blank\">Dylan Miner<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is coming back,&#8221; she said. &#8220;People are asking for the thunderbirds to return.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As for the symbolism of the snake, the story goes, &#8220;there will come a time where there will be a black snake, and this snake will be unending in its hunger and it will swallow the land and the people whole,&#8221; LaPens\u00e9e said. <\/p>\n<p>That story symbolizes the effects of colonialism and human greed.
