However, while the calendar may have changed, the <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.fortinet.com\/2017\/10\/05\/ransomware-are-you-paying-attention\">threat of ransomware<\/a> across industries and geographies has remained. And worse, it&lsquo;s looking like it&rsquo;s about to evolve into an <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.fortinet.com\/2018\/01\/02\/cybersecurity-past-and-future-what-s-come-this-year-and-what-is-coming\">even greater problem<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>This evolution is being largely fueled by the proliferation of the Internet of Things (IoT). According to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.zdnet.com\/article\/iot-devices-will-outnumber-the-worlds-population-this-year-for-the-first-time\/\">Gartner data<\/a>, there were about 8 billion connected &ldquo;things&rdquo; in 2017. But that number is expected to nearly triple to more than <em>20<\/em> <em>billion<\/em> in just the next two years, which is roughly three connected devices per person on Earth.
