{"id":11726,"date":"2018-03-13T15:48:43","date_gmt":"2018-03-13T23:48:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.palada.net\/index.php\/2018\/03\/13\/news-5496\/"},"modified":"2018-03-13T15:48:43","modified_gmt":"2018-03-13T23:48:43","slug":"news-5496","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.palada.net\/index.php\/2018\/03\/13\/news-5496\/","title":{"rendered":"Just one, um, great idea after another"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Credit to Author: Sharky| Date: Tue, 13 Mar 2018 03:00:00 -0700<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Sysadmin pilot fish is approached by the IT director, who tells fish to create an account for the director that has the same capabilities as the lead programmer&#8217;s account.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Seems he had some kind of beef with the lead programmer,&#8221; sighs fish. &#8220;But I created the account, set the privileges and gave him the user name and password.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Three months later, he came into my office accusing me of not complying with his directive.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I told him that I had indeed complied with his instructions, including showing him that the login capability worked as advertised.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He told me he couldn&#8217;t perform a certain operation when he logged in. I explained that neither could the lead programmer. Only system administrators could.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He demanded that he be given system administrator privileges.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I wrote a white paper that I gave to his boss, the VP of Finance, explaining what the IT director was requesting and pointing out that, since he had zero experience in system administration on these systems, I was reluctant to provide him with those privileges.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Needless to say, the VP told me to comply.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I left the company shortly thereafter.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"font-size: 0.875em;\"><strong>Before you hit the road, hit Sharky with your true tale of IT life<\/strong> <i>at <a href=\"mailto:sharky@computerworld.com\" rel=\"nofollow\">sharky@computerworld.com<\/a>.
