Here, we respond to six of the most common.<\/p>\n<h3><em>1. Renewable energy is more expensive.<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Has it been a while since you last looked at renewables? If so, you may still think they are more expensive than conventional sources of energy.<\/p>\n<p>In truth, renewables are quickly becoming one of the most plentiful and cheapest sources of electricity. In 2017, 95% of new electricity capacity added to the U.S. grid was renewable and, globally, solar photovoltaic was the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iea.org\/publications\/renewables2017\/\">fastest growing<\/a> electricity source of all. Solar power is already cheaper than fossil fuels in nearly 60 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencealert.com\/solar-power-is-now-the-cheapest-energy-in-the-world\">developing countries<\/a>. Earlier this year, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.businessinsider.com\/renewable-energy-will-be-cheaper-than-fossil-fuels-by-2020-2018-1\">IRENA reported<\/a> that by 2020, wind and solar generation will be the least expensive electricity sources everywhere.<\/p>\n<p>The economics of renewables benefit from technology improvements, efficiencies, and increasing demand. There are also no input costs for wind or solar generation as they do not rely on fuel. By contrast, fossil fuel extraction, transportation, and combustion is expensive.<\/p>\n<p>Complaints about the cost of renewable energy almost always ignore the externalities of fossil fuel generation, which leads to billions of dollars in annual expense from environmental degradation and human health impacts. Fossil fuel subsidization\u2014which amounts to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/climate-consensus-97-per-cent\/2017\/aug\/07\/fossil-fuel-subsidies-are-a-staggering-5-tn-per-year\">$5 trillion annually<\/a>\u2014is also generally discounted in arguments about the high price of renewables.<\/p>\n<h3><em>2. Renewable energy kills birds.<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>One common complaint about renewable energy is that clean generation kills birds. And while it\u2019s true that turbines do lead to avian deaths, wind farms have one of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aweablog.org\/tucker-carlson-got-wrong-wind-energy\/\">lowest rates<\/a> of impact on birds (and other wildlife) of any form of power generation. Cats, buildings, and cars pose a higher danger.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-51961 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/turbine-bird-deaths-stat.png\" alt=\"Renewable energy myth, statistic about bird deaths\" width=\"1200\" height=\"586\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/turbine-bird-deaths-stat.png 1200w, https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/turbine-bird-deaths-stat-300x147.png 300w, https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/turbine-bird-deaths-stat-768x375.png 768w, https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/turbine-bird-deaths-stat-1024x500.png 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1200px) 100vw, 1200px\" \/> <\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also worth noting the much greater threat\u2014to birds and all species\u2014posed by global warming, the result of the greenhouse effect caused by excessive emissions pollution. Increasing temperatures are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC2781852\/\">causing changes<\/a> in bird migration and reproduction patterns, as well as impacting habitats, food and water sources, and nesting sites. In Europe, a warming climate accounts for the decline <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eea.europa.eu\/data-and-maps\/indicators\/impact-of-climate-change-on\/impact-of-climate-change-on\">in 92 bird species<\/a>, while in North America, <a href=\"http:\/\/climate.audubon.org\/\">314 species<\/a> are imperiled.<\/p>\n<h3><em>3. Renewable energy uses a lot of land.<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>It\u2019s true that renewable energy does require natural resources. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2017\/07\/18\/clean-energy-transition-will-increase-demand-for-minerals-says-new-world-bank-report\">Metals and other minerals<\/a> must be mined or reused to construct turbines, solar panels, and infrastructure. Transmission lines must be laid. And, ultimately, wind farms and solar power plants require land use.\u00a0 But just how much?<\/p>\n<p>The answer varies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-51964 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Tractor-crop-240x300.png\" alt=\"renewable energy land use\" width=\"240\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Tractor-crop-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/Tractor-crop.png 571w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 240px) 100vw, 240px\" \/>Wind farms, for their size, are very efficient in their use of land. On average, these farms <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aweablog.org\/tucker-carlson-got-wrong-wind-energy\/\">leave up to 98%<\/a> of land undisturbed, making it ideal for farming or ranching. For the landowners who lease their property to energy developers, wind farming becomes a secondary source of revenue, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wyomingnews.com\/news\/local_news\/wyoming-ranch-benefits-from-partnership-with-wind-energy\/article_477b313e-eb9e-11e7-b5b6-2b732187dbc0.html\">stabilizing farms<\/a> and preserving a way of life that goes back generations.<\/p>\n<p>The answer isn\u2019t as clear cut when it comes to solar. It takes about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.seia.org\/initiatives\/responsible-land-use\">5-10 acres per megawatt<\/a> of land for utility-scale solar generation, and studies indicate that solar at scale is more cost effective and efficient. This is useful in arid regions like the American Southwest, where land is unsuitable for other uses, but ideal for solar farming.<\/p>\n<p>However, the magnitude of this land use is significant: an acreage about the size of South Carolina will be required to reduce U.S. emissions by 80% by 2050 with solar alone. However, <a href=\"https:\/\/carnegiescience.edu\/news\/solar-energy%E2%80%99s-land-use-impact\">land impacts can be reduced<\/a> by siting solar on land already in use\u2014such as landfills, parking structures, and rooftops. This also puts energy closer to where it is being consumed, reducing the need for additional transmission infrastructure and the impact of grid congestion.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s also important to note that, in a life cycle analysis, land use for utility-scale solar is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.renewableenergyworld.com\/articles\/2013\/08\/calculating-solar-energys-land-use-footprint.html\">still less<\/a> than the average U.S. coal-fired power plant. And renewable energy generation requires drastically less water; nearly zero, compared to coal\u2019s average <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netl.doe.gov\/research\/Coal\/energy-systems\/gasification\/gasifipedia\/water-usage\">427 gallons\/1622 liters<\/a> per megawatt hour.<\/p>\n<h3><em>4. Renewables can\u2019t provide for all our electricity needs.<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>\u201cWhat about baseload power?\u201d is a common question when it comes to renewable generation. Many are skeptical that the intermittency of wind and solar generation can adequately and reliably meet our growing electricity needs\u2014particularly the fluctuations in peak demand that occur during specific seasons and times of day (a supply-and-demand volatility that has given rise to California\u2019s now infamous <a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/search?q=California+solar+duck+curve&amp;rlz=1C1GGRV_enUS765US765&amp;oq=California+solar+duck+curve&amp;aqs=chrome..69i57.3944j0j7&amp;sourceid=chrome&amp;ie=UTF-8\">\u201cduck\u201d curve<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>A 2018 research paper published in the journal <em>Energy<\/em><em> and Environmental <\/em><em>Science<\/em> indicates that the U.S. could reach up to 80% penetration of overlapping wind and solar resources, and even as high as 90%. When complemented with other forms of new energy, such as hydropower, biofuels, storage, and demand-response the number achievable is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/environment\/climate-consensus-97-per-cent\/2018\/mar\/26\/study-wind-and-solar-can-power-most-of-the-united-states\">100% or more<\/a>. Research from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ucsusa.org\/clean_energy\/smart-energy-solutions\/increase-renewables\/renewable-energy-80-percent-us-electricity.html#.W0Lhf6dKjIU\">NREL<\/a> finds that the U.S. could achieve 80% renewable energy penetration by 2050, and that this high renewables scenario will meet electricity demand 24\/7.<\/p>\n<p> <img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright wp-image-51965\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/12493605_ML-300x181.jpg\" alt=\"renewable energy generation and the grid\" width=\"295\" height=\"178\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/12493605_ML-300x181.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/12493605_ML-768x462.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.schneider-electric.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/12493605_ML-1024x616.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 295px) 100vw, 295px\" \/> <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.climatecouncil.org.au\/2016\/02\/16\/11-countries-leading-the-charge-on-renewable-energy\/\">Many countries<\/a> are already leading the way. Sweden has set a 100% renewable energy target. Costa Rica regularly achieves 90% of its electricity production from renewable sources. Germany has long been noted for its high percentage of renewables penetration, reaching as much as 78% demand with wind and solar.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s increasingly apparent that a renewable future is feasible. Renewables are challenging traditional sources of baseload power, including <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vox.com\/energy-and-environment\/2018\/7\/13\/17551878\/natural-gas-markets-renewable-energy?mc_cid=0857722e04&amp;mc_eid=a9851d5efd\">natural gas<\/a>, and <a href=\"https:\/\/pv-magazine-usa.com\/2018\/06\/28\/with-more-solar-and-wind-north-americas-grid-is-getting-more-reliable\/\">recent research<\/a> by the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) show that they are making the grid more reliable, too.<\/p>\n<h3><em>5. Renewables cause global warming<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>Another myth that continues to plague renewables, and wind power generation in particular.\u00a0 First covered by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/ezra-klein\/post\/no-wind-farms-are-not-causing-global-warming\/2012\/04\/30\/gIQAMl2GsT_blog.html?utm_term=.de550be63b15\">popular media in 2012<\/a>, a controversial and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cell.com\/joule\/fulltext\/S2542-4351(18)30446-X\">highly debatable new study<\/a> has again asserted that wind turbines might cause global warming. The study\u2019s flawed analysis was exacerbated by its hypothetical and extreme assumptions of the future energy mix, and the media\u2019s misrepresentation of the findings.<\/p>\n<p>The truth is, the study\u2019s model does not imply that wind turbines add more heat or carbon pollution to the atmosphere, but that they may result in <em>localized <\/em>temperature increases due to mixing of air layers. This redistribution of heat has the potential to raise temperature profiles of the immediate surrounding area on some nights. One of the assumptions of the study was a high geographic concentration of turbines, and a major flaw was that study authors did not properly account for the scale of land required for each turbine. The conclusion that temporary surface temperature changes contribute to global warming is unfounded and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aweablog.org\/fact-check-no-wind-turbines-not-cause-climate-change\/\">has been refuted<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s important to weigh such findings against the benefits renewables bring to local communities and their contributions to reducing climate change-causing carbon emissions. Consider: In 2017 alone, wind power cut air pollution enough to create $8 billion in public health benefits. \u00a0And even if wind turbines were a source of global warming, as the study claims, their contribution to warming pales in comparison to our current fossil-fuel driven trajectory.<\/p>\n<h3><em>6. Renewables aren\u2019t easy to access.<\/em><\/h3>\n<p>While it was once true that it was difficult for companies to access renewables, times have changed.
