The Chinese authorities have not mentioned which Micron products are banned, what kind of security risk they pose, nor what would happen to existing Micron products that are already in use.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe review found that Micron\u2019s products have more serious cybersecurity problems and pose significant security risks to China\u2019s critical information infrastructure supply chain, affecting China\u2019s national security,\u201d according to a machine translation of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.cac.gov.cn\/2023-05\/21\/c_1686348043518073.htm\" rel=\"nofollow\">a Cyberspace Affairs Commission of China statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The statement added that for this reason, the Network Security Review Office has concluded that the network security review should not be passed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAccording to the Network Security Law and other laws and regulations, operators of critical information infrastructure in China should stop purchasing Micron products,\u201d the Commission said in the statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The purpose of this network security review of Micron\u2019s products was to prevent product network security issues from endangering the security of the country\u2019s key information infrastructure, which is a necessary measure to maintain national security, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3692435\/china-to-probe-micron-over-cybersecurity-in-chip-war-s-latest-battle.html\">statement<\/a> by the Commission on March 31.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The move by China could be considered as the first step of retaliation, after several other countries banned the import of Chinese hardware due to security concerns. Countries such as the UK and Sweden have imposed bans on hardware products from China. Germany is still scrutinizing the use of Chinese equipment in its major carrier networks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After the announcement by China, the US Commerce Department released a statement stating it opposes the restriction as it has no basis.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have seen the announcement by the People\u2019s Republic of China (PRC) regarding Micron. We firmly oppose restrictions that have no basis in fact,\u201d a Commerce Department spokesperson said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AnnieLinskey\/status\/1660458553231163392\/photo\/1\" rel=\"nofollow\">statement<\/a>, shared by journalists on Twitter.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This action, along with recent raids and targeting of other American firms, is inconsistent with the PRC\u2019s assertions that it is opening its markets and committed to a transparent regulatory framework, the statement said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will engage directly with PRC authorities to detail our position and clarify their action. We also will engage with key allies and partners to ensure we are closely coordinated to address distortions of the memory chip market caused by China\u2019s actions,\u201d the statement said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The chipmaker acknowledged it had received the regulator\u2019s review and looked \u201cforward to continuing to engage in discussions with Chinese authorities,\u201d according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/markets\/asia\/south-koreas-sk-hynix-shares-rise-slightly-after-china-fails-us-rival-micron-2023-05-22\/\" rel=\"nofollow\">Reuters.<\/a>\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Micron did not immediately respond to a request for comment.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The latest announcement by China intensifies the ongoing semiconductor trade dispute that is disrupting the chip supply chain.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>There have been a series of measures, taken by the US presidential administrations of Joe Biden and Donald Trump, that barred the use of Chinese-made hardware in US networks and imposed export controls to keep the latest computing technology out of China\u2019s hands.<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/public-inspection.federalregister.gov\/2022-21658.pdf\" rel=\"nofollow\">October<\/a>, the Biden administration issued export controls that block US companies from selling advanced semiconductors and equipment to certain Chinese manufacturers unless they receive a special license.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bis.doc.gov\/index.php\/documents\/about-bis\/newsroom\/press-releases\/3196-2022-12-15-bis-press-release-entity-list-additions-and-unverified-list-modifications-1\/file\" rel=\"nofollow\">December<\/a>, the restrictions were expanded to include 36 additional Chinese chip makers from accessing US chip technology, including Yangtze Memory Technologies Corporation (YMTC), the largest contract chip maker in the world.
