Some will find them minor annoyances. Others \u2026 not so much. Here are the known bugs, and where we stand in the struggle to resolve the problems.<\/p>\n<p>Worthy of note: Microsoft is now acknowledging many bugs that in the past would\u2019ve gone without comment. There\u2019s hope.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the known, significant buggy security patches:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4036121\/august-2017-updates-for-microsoft-office\">Dozens of patches were made to Office<\/a> earlier this month but, so far, I\u2019m not aware of any bugs.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on which version of Windows you\u2019re using, and how you\u2019re using it, those bugs may be important or they may be annoyances.<\/p>\n<p>I continue to recommend that you <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3213929\/microsoft-windows\/the-case-against-windows-automatic-update.html\">hold off on applying this month\u2019s patches<\/a>. I haven\u2019t seen any malware outbreaks that are blocked by the August patches, and we may get some surprises \u2014 good, bad or indifferent \u2014 later today.<\/p>\n<p><em>Have a question or a bug report? There\u2019s hope.<\/p>\n<p>Here are the known, significant buggy security patches:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Windows 10 Anniversary Update<\/strong>, version 1607 \u2013 Cumulative update KB 4034658 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3214488\/microsoft-windows\/windows-10-1607-cumulative-update-kb-4034658-wipes-out-update-history.html\">wipes out Update History<\/a>, unhides <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3214488\/microsoft-windows\/windows-10-1607-cumulative-update-kb-4034658-wipes-out-update-history.html\">hidden updates<\/a>, and effectively <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3215150\/microsoft-windows\/more-problems-with-kb-4034658-august-cumulative-update-for-win10-1607server-2016.html\">disconnects some updated computers from WSUS<\/a>. Microsoft has acknowledged all three of those bugs in the <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4034658\">KB 4034658<\/a> article with the usual \u201cMicrosoft is investigating this issue and will provide an update as soon as possible.\u201d<\/li>\n<li>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3212745\/microsoft-windows\/surface-pro-4-problems-windows-hello-disappears-shaky-screen.html\">first undocumented buggy driver<\/a> this month for the <strong>Surface Pro 4<\/strong>, \u201cSurface &#8211; System &#8211; 7\/21\/2017 12:00:00 AM &#8211; 1.0.65.1,\u201d was released on August 1. It was <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3213217\/microsoft-windows\/new-surface-pro-4-driver-restores-windows-hello-and-this-time-its-documented.html\">replaced by a second driver<\/a> \u201cSurface \u2013 System \u2013 7\/31\/2007 12:00:00 AM &#8211; 1.0.75.1\u201d on August 4. The second one was documented. But then we saw four more undocumented Surface Pro 4 drivers \u2014 \u201cIntel driver update for Intel(r) Dynamic Platform and Thermal Framework Generic Participant,\u201d \u201cPower Participant,\u201d Processor Participant\u201d and \u201cManager\u201d \u2014 all released on Saturday, August 12. Sometime late on August 14, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.microsoft.com\/surface\/en-us\/support\/install-update-activate\/surface-pro-update-history\">Microsoft posted information<\/a> about two of the drivers.<\/li>\n<li>Both the <strong>Windows 7<\/strong> August Monthly rollup KB 4034664 and the manually installed security-only patch KB 4034679 are causing problems with two-screen systems: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.computerworld.com\/article\/3215194\/microsoft-windows\/two-of-this-months-win7-patches-causing-second-screen-problems.html\">The second screen starts showing gibberish<\/a> with many applications, including Office. The problem has been widely reported \u2014 even replicated with a Proof of Concept program \u2014 but Microsoft hasn\u2019t yet acknowledged it.<\/li>\n<li>The only bug <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4034664\">reported by Microsoft<\/a> in its August <strong>Windows 7<\/strong> security patches is an old bug, continuing from July, in which a buggy LDAP plugs up TCP dynamic ports. That bug hasn\u2019t been fixed.<\/li>\n<li>The <strong>Windows 8.1<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/support.microsoft.com\/en-us\/help\/4034681\">Monthly rollup listing<\/a> mentions a known bug: NPS authentication may break, and wireless clients may fail to connect.
