The horse&#8217;s name was Tonto, and we all loved him, because horses are pure, good, and deserving of our love.<\/p>\n<p> Zinke has since pivoted to other publicity efforts, like <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/blogs\/blog-briefing-room\/351434-zinke-putting-big-buck-hunter-in-interior-dept-cafeteria-to-promote\" target=\"_blank\">installing<\/a> Big Buck Hunter in the agency&#8217;s cafeteria and launching &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/animalia\/wp\/2017\/05\/05\/interior-launches-doggy-days-becoming-first-federal-agency-to-welcome-pets\/?utm_term=.ab9943a349ad\" target=\"_blank\">Doggy Day<\/a>&#8221; (a bring-your-dog-to-work initiative) at the Interior. He&#8217;s also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/health-science\/shrink-at-least-4-national-monuments-and-modify-a-half-dozen-others-zinke-tells-trump\/2017\/09\/17\/a0df45cc-9b48-11e7-82e4-f1076f6d6152_story.html\" target=\"_blank\">proposed to shrink<\/a> four national monuments, cancelled <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/pressreleases\/interior-repeals-defective-federal-mineral-valuation-rule\" target=\"_blank\">a temporary ban<\/a> on new federal coal leases, and pushed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/politics\/trump-administration-working-toward-renewed-drilling-in-arctic-national-wildlife-refuge\/2017\/09\/15\/bfa5765e-97ea-11e7-87fc-c3f7ee4035c9_story.html?utm_term=.4ba4b44e5db3\" target=\"_blank\">for drilling<\/a> in Alaska&#8217;s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.<\/p>\n<div style=\"max-width: 550px;\" data-iframely-id=\"Rq9Rgkm\" class=\"article__embed article__embed--iframely\">\n<div style=\"left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.25%;\" data-iframely-smart-iframe=\"true\"><iframe  src= width=\"100%\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" ><\/iframe> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p> But back to Tonto. I wanted to know <a href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/nz5va7\/everything-we-know-about-the-horse-ryan-zinke-rode-to-work\">as much as possible<\/a> about him, so I submitted a public records request to the US Park Police, the National Park Service (NPS) division that owns him. Yesterday, I received 20 pages of documents regarding our favorite gelding, and it turns out he&#8217;s been very busy.<\/p>\n<div data-iframely-id=\"0Ys9WjY\" class=\"article__embed article__embed--iframely\">\n<div style=\"left: 0; width: 100%; height: 0; position: relative; padding-bottom: 141.4227%;\" data-iframely-smart-iframe=\"true\"><iframe  src= width=\"100%\" height=\"420\" frameborder=\"0\" ><\/iframe> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>I learned a few important things. For instance, Tonto has recently been dewormed. That&#8217;s because all the horses at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nps.gov\/subjects\/uspp\/horse-mounted-unit.htm\" target=\"_blank\">Edgewater stables<\/a>, where Tonto was residing, were exposed to worms by horses &#8220;Carmen&#8221; and &#8220;Remington,&#8221; who showed high parasite counts in March. In total, 20 Edgewater horses were dewormed 10 days ahead of schedule. (VICE News learned that Tonto&#8217;s full name is &#8220;Tonto Silvershoes.&#8221;)<\/p>\n<p> Zinke himself requested an interview with Tonto and Fox &#038; Friends on April 25; it was later rescheduled due to a conflict with Zinke&#8217;s schedule. A look at his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.doi.gov\/sites\/doi.gov\/files\/uploads\/17-00535ca.pdf\" target=\"_blank\">April calendar<\/a>, which the Interior Department voluntarily released, reveals that Zinke was tied up in meetings. At the time, Swift was a part of Trump&#8217;s Interior Beachhead Team\u2014tasked with keeping watch on the agency&#8217;s transition. Swift has since become Interior Press Secretary, and played an instrumental role in <a href=\"https:\/\/motherboard.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/8xxdbz\/foia-internal-emails-show-government-officials-scrambling-to-explain-why-climate-scientists-meeting-with-mark-zuckerberg-was-canceled-interior-usgs-facebook\">the controversial banning<\/a> of a federal climate scientist from Mark Zuckerberg&#8217;s tour at Glacier National Park in July.<\/p>\n<p> But, again, back to Tonto. I&#8217;m sort of concerned about Tonto. <\/p>\n<p> &#8220;Must we do this at H1? Designed for the United States Bicentennial in 1976, they&#8217;ve remained in use ever since. NPS is already beset with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.outsideonline.com\/2158451\/whats-really-stake-park-services-12-billion-backlog\" target=\"_blank\">$12 million<\/a> maintenance backlog, and Trump&#8217;s <a href=\"http:\/\/thehill.com\/policy\/energy-environment\/340704-trumps-park-service-salary-donation-goes-to-civil-war-battlefield\" target=\"_blank\">proposed budget<\/a> would shrink the agency&#8217;s coffers by 13 percent\u2014cuts that Zinke has defended, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/news\/energy-environment\/wp\/2017\/06\/20\/zinke-defends-trumps-sharp-cuts-at-interior-this-is-what-a-balanced-budget-looks-like\/?utm_term=.d9ae2cb73f59\" target=\"_blank\">saying<\/a> &#8220;This is what a balanced budget looks like.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p> Zinke was more than happy to trot Tonto out for high-publicity events, meanwhile. An email shows that Zinke asked to ride Tonto in the annual Cherry Blossom Festival in April. Aww, feel better, Tonto!<\/p>\n<p> &#8220;We can set up a time to do Spirit&#8217;s melanomas, Tonto&#8217;s lip, and Lancelot as well,&#8221; a Virginia-based veterinary clinic wrote. <\/p>\n<p> A spokesperson for the US Park Police told me Tonto has a growth on his lip around the size of a quarter.
