Fortinet at HIMSS 2017: Two Sessions to Attend

Last March, Fortinet team members joined more than 40,000 HIMSS16 attendees in Las Vegas to discuss the latest trends and developments in healthcare information technology.

While the 2016 event featured a number of fascinating exhibits and sessions, it will likely be remembered as the year healthcare security hit a critical mass. Interoperability across the industry and breaches at healthcare organizations both large and small put cybersecurity at the top of the to-do list for healthcare IT professionals.

Let’s fast-forward to this year. HIMSS 2017 is being held in Orlando from February 19-23 and Fortinet will once again be there with a strong presence. In fact, Fortinet will be hosting two different educational sessions (only 180 abstracts were accepted) at this year’s event, which is a testament to the company’s solutions and role as a thought leader within the cybersecurity marketplace.

Here are a couple of sessions to consider whether you’ll be attending the event in Orlando or following the latest happenings online.

Securing the Next-Generation Healthcare Enterprise

When: Tuesday, February 21 – 8:30-9:30AM

Where: Orange County Convention Center – Room: W303A

Why: Healthcare data is both sensitive and complex. This fact, paired with decentralized hospital and healthcare data centers, means protecting against attacks is a high-pressure task. For example, hospitals may be able to easily monitor and protect hospital-owned mobile devices, but securing the BYOD movement is far more complex. During this session, the speakers will showcase some of the most pertinent security challenges healthcare is faced with today and will help IT professionals distinguish the difference between real threats and noise. For healthcare organizations to truly protect themselves and their data, they must be able to recognize this difference.

Who: Hussein Syed and Ladi Adefala will lead this session. Syed is the chief information security officer at RWJBarnabas Health and is a member of the CHIME/AEHIS board. Ladi Adefala is a senior security strategist at Fortinet and has an abundance of experience with enterprise network, mobility, data center, and advanced cybersecurity solutions.

What Can Be Learned and Who Should Attend: IT professionals of all experience levels are encouraged to attend this session. Attendees will learn about the current security threats healthcare faces, how to align security with the evolving healthcare business model, and the emerging trends to watch out for.

The New Battleground: Ransomware and Other Advanced Threats

When: Wednesday, February 22 – 1:00-2:00PM

Where: Orange County Convention Center – Tangerine Ballroom, F4

Why: There were a number of high-profile attacks on healthcare organizations in 2016. Many of these attacks came in the form of ransomware, as cyber criminals look to profit off the historically soft nature of healthcare security. However, ransomware is not the only threat healthcare is facing. Health IT professionals need to be continuously working to identify new attack types before they make an impact. This session will showcase how some healthcare providers are using advanced threat protection strategies to better secure today’s networks.

Who: Josh Kinsler and Lynne Dunbrack will lead this session. Kinsler has more than 22 years of IT security experience and is the senior engineering manager at Community Health Network. Lynne Dunbrack is the research vice president for IDC Health Insights and specializes in mobile, constituency engagement, interoperability, health information exchange, privacy, and security.

What Can Be Learned and Who Should Attend: IT and security professionals, as well as process improvement professionals, should attend this session. Attendees will learn about the top threats healthcare systems face, how today’s cyber criminals are building automated systems to breach networks, and how to create a security plan to defend healthcare networks.

We are excited to be attending HIMSS 2017 and we look forward to seeing you at our sessions!
