Organizations today are faced with an unenviable task: meeting market demands for continuous innovation and growth while keeping key systems and data safe from a growing range of cyber threats. To add to this already monumental task, it must all be done without disrupting network performance or having to sacrifice security for performance. This is where our TippingPoint® Threat Protection Systems (TPS) come into play, securing customers against known, undisclosed and unknown vulnerabilities with high accuracy without adversely impacting network performance.

But don’t take our word for it: one of our newest members of the TippingPoint TPS family has just received a glowing review from NSS Labs. The 8400TX had an overall security effectiveness rating of 99.6% and an above average total cost of ownership (TCO), earning it the prestigious “Recommended” rating yet again.

Thirty-eight billion and counting

Cyber threats may be evolving all the time but the sheer volume we’re seeing today is on a quite unprecedented scale. Trend Micro alone blocked more than 38 billion threats in the first half of the year, including over 82 million ransomware attacks. Threats can range from sophisticated covert attacks featuring zero-day exploits to basic phishing attempts designed to socially engineer users into clicking on or opening malicious links or attachments.

For those organizations who fail to put adequate measures in place, data breaches, IP theft and damaging service outages await. As we’ve seen time and again, the impact on the victim organization from a financial and reputational point-of-view can be catastrophic. Based on various studies, the cost of an average data breach is approaching almost $4 million, but customer attrition and long-term damage to the brand can have an even bigger impact.

In the face of such threats, a multi-layered approach to security is needed, comprising multiple threat prevention techniques covering each major incursion point: gateway, cloud and on-premise server, endpoint, and network. Next-Generation Intrusion Prevention Systems (NGIPS) are an essential part of this layered approach.

Top marks from NSS Labs

NSS Labs recently completed its 2017 NGIPS Group Test, evaluating solutions from (number) vendors. Their comprehensive appraisal of our TippingPoint 8400TX involved putting the system through a series of rigorous tests. One of the tests involved NSS Labs’ Cyber Advanced Warning System (CAWS), which measures how security products protect against “drive-by” exploits targeting client applications. The TippingPoint 8400TX threat encounter block rate came in with a success rate of 99.93%, and passed false positive testing as well as all stability and reliability tests. Even better, NSS Labs asserted that the product was resistant to all evasion techniques; an increasingly common way for hackers to hide their attacks.

In addition, NSS Labs also tests the security effectiveness of the solutions in the NGIPS group test within the context of their performance. Organizations need solutions that are specifically designed to withstand the demands of a high performance network environment that do not compromise security for performance (and vice versa). The TippingPoint 8400TX recorded UDP latency numbers at just under eight microseconds!

The NSS Labs NGIPS group test also looks at solutions from a total cost of ownership perspective to help organizations find the best solution that not only protects their network, but also provides the best value for organizations with limited budgets and resources. Now leveraging a new flexible licensing model, the TX Series can help organizations easily scale performance and security requirements with a pay-as-you-grow approach. And with a TCO per protected Mbps at $6.00, the TippingPoint TX Series is definitely a solution worth considering for your network security needs.

The TX Series is based on XGen™, Trend Micro’s cross-generational approach which blends multiple threat prevention techniques for maximum effectiveness against the wide range of threats facing modern organizations. The TippingPoint Threat Protection System family features deep packet inspection, threat reputation, machine learning, URL reputation, advanced malware analysis and more to provide the visibility and capability necessary to maintain and enhance a proactive security posture.

Combined with Trend Micro Smart Protection Network-powered threat intelligence, we think it’s a winning combination for next-gen network-level protection, and NSS Labs agrees.
