The Indian electrical industry is multifaceted, assembling an array of items which run from powerful innovation equipment to low innovation electrical parts. After all, the electrical business is a work-intensive sector, giving direct work and employment to a sizeable percentage of the country’s population. It is common that such a remarkable and pervasive industry has sub-categories as well. Moving ahead, below I have elaborated on some critical and unique equipment and devices used in the electrical industry:

Contactors

A contactor can be explained as an electrically-controlled switch, essentially used for switching an electrical power circuit. A contactor is generally controlled by a circuit that has a significantly lower power level than the respective switched circuit.

Contactors are created to be directly connected to high-current load devices. Devices switching circuits with a power greater than 15 amperes or more than a few kilowatts are generally called contactors. With the exception of optional auxiliary low-current contacts, contactors are almost uniquely fitted with normally open (“form A”) contacts.

Motor Starter

The main function of a motor starter is to kickstart and stop the motor to which it is linked. These appliances are distinctly designed electromechanical switches, comparable to relays. The primary difference between a relay and a starter is that a starter offers the function of overload protection for the motor.

Motor starters are made available in different ratings and sizes, which vary in accordance with the motor (AC motor) rating and size. These starters safely switch the required power to the motor and also prevent the situation of drawing heavy currents.

Variable Speed Drives

A VSD is a technological device that controls and monitors the speed and rotational force – commonly referred to as torque output – of an electric motor. These drives are amplifying the management of mechanical movement-related functions. Fitting examples include packaging, material handling, material working, and hoisting. Additionally, VSDs that offer web services introduce IIoT connectivity at the device level and also enable processes to analyse and improve their functions.

Protection Relays

A protective relay is a relay device created in order to trip the circuit breakers when a fault is identified. The initial concept of a protective relay was implemented in electromagnetic devices, depending on coils operating in moving parts to initiate the tripping of a circuit breaker in extraordinary operating conditions – over-current, over-voltage, reverse power flow, over-frequency, and under-frequency.

Electric Relays

A relay is an electrically controlled switch, which mainly use an electromagnet to function a switching mechanism mechanically. However, other operating principles are utilised as well. Relays are needed in situations where it is imperative to control a circuit by a low-power signal, or where several circuits need to be regulated by one signal.
