VB2020 call for papers – now open!

In the October 1990 edition of Virus Bulletin (pdf), then a printed monthly magazine sent to subscribers around the world by post, the very first Virus Bulletin conference was announced. Today, we open the call for papers for VB2020, the 30th Virus Bulletin conference, which is to take place in Dublin, 30 September to 2 October next year. (You can find more details about the call for papers here, or go directly to the Extranet where you can submit a paper.)

In 1990 the objectives of the conference were described as “1) to present factual information about computer viruses, 2) to demonstrate defensive procedures, 3) to discuss probable future virus developments and countermeasures, and 4) to attempt to harmonise research efforts”.

Though VB has long since ceased to be an (anti-)virus conference, in many ways the objectives have stayed the same: to share information on threats and the tools to fight them, to discuss possible future developments, and to collaborate on research. (Do not let this description put you off though: we very much welcome ‘out-of-the-box’ submissions!)

We are particularly interested in hearing from speakers who can share their experiences from the real world, who are employed by businesses, governments or NGOs, and who are tasked with securing systems and fending off attacks.

The deadline for submissions is 15 March 2020. For more information on how the selection procedure works, please refer to a blog post I wrote at the beginning of this year.

A small number of slots on the conference programme will be reserved for ‘last-minute papers’ dealing with very ‘hot’ research topics; the call for these ‘last-minute’ papers will go out in the summer. Registration for the conference will open in April 2020.

Should you have any queries about the call for papers, if you have an idea that doesn’t fit the standard format, or just want to talk over your proposal prior to submitting, please don’t hesitate to email us at conference@virusbulletin.com.

We look forward to hearing from you!
