The world does not remain static but is continuously transforming. Along with this, the mindsets of people also change. Modern society is heading towards digital transformation, particularly in the electric utility sector. Technological innovations have led to a complete paradigm shift with us now inhabiting a world where energy is more reliable, accessible, and affordable. The fourth industrial revolution has enabled utility companies to provide increased speeds and enhanced efficiency in their work, leading to superior customer satisfaction. Advanced analytics systems along with the access to real-time critical data have furthered the digital agenda of the electric utility sector. Digitalisation is playing a significant role at both the operational and consumer level with companies striving to come up with smart electrical products.

The traditional electrical switchboards have become antiques with the emergence of smart switchboards in the market. The primary function of electrical switchboards is to regulate and manage the flow of power to ensure the protection of your equipment from overloads. A smart switchboard is pre-configured and allows for two-way communications between the user and the device. The remote monitoring features ensure that the interaction occurs in real-time and the HMI technology that’s incorporated within this technology makes the communication process more manageable. The faster service and enhanced quality of the smart boards make it an ideal product for consumers. This facilitates a speedier production process that – along with lowered prices – appeal to the large manufacturers.

Technological advancements have prompted the arrival of smart switches and smart electric outlets. This smart technology has replaced the conventional electrical switches and electrical sockets which have now become redundant. The internet-abled electric outlets provide for a better home energy management system. Since we can control the enhanced electrical switches and electrical sockets using Wi-Fi, this apparatus offers increased energy savings and lower power consumption.

Smart plugs and outlets allow you to control any device, as you can now set timers and turn them on and off by simply using an app on your phone. Additionally, smart light switches have sensors embedded in them that can detect movement and shine a light in that particular direction. Another feature that endears smart technology to the public is the increased protection it offers as they can quickly notify the users in case of any discrepancy. With everyone joining the energy conservation trend, smart switches have completely replaced these older models.

Electric relays are switching devices that are used to isolate an electronic circuit from one state to another. They have various applications, the most prominent of them being telephone lines. They are incredibly important because of the protection they provide to your electrical gadgets and equipment. Utility companies have also started manufacturing a smart option for electric relays, known as smart power relays. The increased reliability and high security of smart relays have made standard electric relays a thing of the past.

Digitalisation has undoubtedly transformed the electric systems that we currently use. Everything from electrical sockets to electrical switchboards has a better and smarter alternative available. Technological innovations and a societal inclination towards energy conservation has paved the way for a digitalised future and eliminate high priority smart city challenges.
