International Energy Outlook report, 2017 states that the global energy consumption is expected to grow by 28 percent between 2014 and 2040. However, the current electrical grid system was insufficient to compete with the increased energy demand. The replacement of outdated infrastructure is keeping up with the demand of industrial processes and power distribution generated through different means. The modernisation of hardware and software innovations ensures a smarter, faster and more efficient flow of energy.
Distribution management systems are deployed in order to overcome the existing power distribution and administration channels and give industries an edge in terms of efficiency of operation. Moreover, it helps businesses to scale up the economic and environmental potential of their digital grid.
The new age distribution management systems also take into consideration protection devices that help protect the system from surges or fluctuating power supply. For a system with multiple operations, any delay due to an outage in a power channel will stop the entire process. Therefore, protection relays can save the system from breakdown while the power distribution system dedicates another channel to keep the power flow steady.
SCADA is commonly used in many industries and is not unique to electric power systems. It consists of software and hardware systems that monitor, collect and process data. ADMS is a revolution in the computation technology as it brings the theory of Internet of Things into existence. It is an advanced system that is bridging the gap between the software and hardware components. It brings them together on a software component where the operations can be synchronised and monitored to generate optimal output. Another significant challenge that it serves is concerning essential ADMS applications. In instances of fault location, isolation, and service restoration (FLISR), volt-var optimization (VVO), etc. the system, when coupled with other supporting channels can help reduce downtime.
